Letter-writing & artist book.
In the weeks between election night and Inauguration Day, I encouraged and collected letters to President Obama on his last day in office and President Trump on his first. These letters celebrate (Presidential letter-)writing in its most elastic sense and have been re-produced at scale and in black and white. Each spread features a writer's "last day" letter on the left and their "first day" letter on the right. All front and back matter (cover, title page, copyright info, etc.) has been handwritten.
November 9, 2016 ¶ Last Day, First Day proposes Presidential letter-writing as a reflexive and political act. ¶ You are invited to write and share two letters: one for a President leaving, and another for a President arriving. The mental, physical, poetic, and political space of letter-writing serves as a platform to communicate outwards to our leaders at profound moments in their careers as much as it is for us a means to reflect inwards during a profoundly fractured moment in American history. ¶ Writing as a practice prompts a communicative space to rebel, to lament, to plead, to warn, to praise, to digest, to move forward. Letters are welcome from any person of any worldview, anywhere in the world, though you must write both letters to be included. ¶ With love and thanks, Erik
